Energy Model Specialist

As an Energy Model Specialist, you will create, analyze, and review energy models, provide energy efficiency consulting to clients, perform energy management system evaluation, and develop carbon reduction strategies. You will make daily decisions based on ASHRAE, LEED, and BREEAM standards, and perform quality reviews of energy models created by others. You will analyze consumption and usage patterns within utility analyses, make recommendations for energy efficiency measures, calculate and propose carbon/emission reductions; and develop business case and metrics supporting a companys energy goals. 

Key Responsibilities
Energy Modeling:

  • Provide quality reviews of energy model inputs and outputs performed by others and provide technical review commentary based on ASHRAE 90.1 Appendix G and LEED modeling protocols.
  • Create and supervise the creation of new energy models for clients in a variety of consulting scenarios including LEED compliance, project design development, and ECM development projects
  • Develop ECM Spreadsheets for exceptional calculations within energy models and for the development of energy use reduction projects
  • Analyze or oversee the analysis of utility data for benchmarking, utility auditing, demand reduction, and the GHG impact of energy consumption
  • Calculate and communicate the impact of on-site and off-site renewable energy to project energy use and GHG impact. Review, understand, and provide feedback on building design documentation such as MEP plans and schedules
  • Make client-facing recommendations for energy efficiency measures
  • Enable projects to pursue Net Zero energy and or carbon. Be able to communicate the strategies necessary to achieve these goals and effectively guide projects to understand the energy, cost, and environmental impacts or either energy or carbon strategies 

LEED Submittal Reviewing:

• Perform technical review of LEED project submittals in the LEED BD+C v4 and v4.1 rating systems
• Be responsible for technical feedback in all Energy and Atmosphere, and MEP related Indoor Environmental Quality prerequisites and credits
• Communicate through clear technical writing discrepancies between the submittal and the rating systems or supporting standards such as ASHRAE 90.1, 62.1, or 55.
• Communicate with project teams answering their questions on how to meet the requirements of the standard based on the feedback that you have provided after submittal review.

Job Dynamics:

  • Support senior colleagues in business development, including proposal writing, and in the development of work plans, schedules, and budgets for the delivery of client projects 
  • Support collaboration with clients through development of tools and deliverables 
  • Support projects across the range of 3R’s service offerings 
  • Generate case studies, articles, presentations, and videos related to 3R’s work as needed for business development 
  • Deliver tasks on time, within budget, and assist project managers to ensure that projects perform against targets and deadlines 
  • Work on several differing projects simultaneously 

Qualifications

The ideal applicant must be able to demonstrate excellent qualitative and quantitative skills, combined with an entrepreneurial attitude and a strategic thinking and doing mindset, in addition to the following minimum qualifications: 

  • Possess at least five to seven years of experience related directly to energy modeling  
  • Possess professional credentials such as LEED AP, CEM, CEA, BEMP, BESA, EIT/PE, etc. 
  • Have in-depth experience creating and analyzing energy models with EnergyPlus, eQuest (DOE 2.3) software or similar software tools 
  • Have experience in Energy Audits and Energy Benchmarking 
  • Possess detailed technical understanding of one or more of the following subjects: HVAC systems, electrical systems, common construction methods, construction planning, renewable energy production, energy purchasing, and energy use GHG impact 
  • Have background working with large data sets and proven ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate findings 
  • Skilled in data science, data visualization, and report writing 
  • Demonstrated ability to assimilate and analyze operational and environmental data for compliance, indicators, and trends 
  • Understand the connection between high-performance buildings, carbon reduction, and ESG 
  • Experience working directly with clients 

Additional consideration will be given to candidates who:
• Have experience in Building Commissioning or as a Performance Testing Agent
• Currently hold or currently pursuing the following credentials: LEED AP With specialty, , and/or LEED Certification Reviewer certificate, or a valid CEM or PE
• Hold certificate(s) in GHG accounting, carbon management and/or GHG measurement, reporting and verification
• Hold a master’s degree in sustainability, engineering and/or business, or equivalent certifications

Key Responsibilities

Carbon Reduction Program Development

  • Conduct stakeholder engagements including interviewing senior/executive positions across client-base to understand organizational priorities
  • Gather data to calculate Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas inventories
  • Analyze environmental trend data (e.g., energy/GHG emissions/water/waste) to identify opportunities for improvement, set targets for reduction, and define action plans to achieve goals
  • Conduct Scope 3 GHG screenings and prioritize greatest opportunities
  • Develop and implement programs to calculate Scope 3 GHG inventories employing life-cycle and GHG protocol methodologies
  • Develop roadmaps to set and achieve net zero commitments utilizing all available tools
  • Conduct Lifecycle Assessments for carbon reduction
  • Provide appropriate data and analysis to help clients set Science-Based Targets (SBT)
  • Create dynamic and innovative analytics-driven deliverables, including dashboards, spreadsheets, presentations, and reports
  • Collaborate and work across clients’ organizations to drive implementation and results
  • Develop sustainability programs (internally and with suppliers) to drive reduction in areas of greatest impact

CDP and TCFD Reporting

  • Lead efforts with clients to prepare CDP and TCFD Reporting
  • Establish climate-related risk analyses and scenario planning in line with CDP and TCFD
  • Draft, edit, and approve content to report on behalf of clients to communicate sustainability progress and goals in corporate sustainability reports and communications
  • Prepare/approve language to respond to rating agencies and/or customer questionnaires on behalf of clients

Job Dynamics

  • In the course of one year, earn the Sustainability Excellence Associate (SEA) and relevant credentials such as, the GRI Professional Certification, AA1000 Practitioner, LEED Green Associate, etc.
  • Have experience with LCAs and corporate GHG inventories (scope 1, 2, 3)
  • Background working with large data sets and proven ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate findings
  • Skilled in data science and data visualization

Key Responsibilities

ESG Program Establishment

  • Support materiality and gap assessments, and define ESG/sustainability programs, by applying international sustainability rating systems and frameworks such as GRI, SASB, CDP, TCFD, EcoVadis, ISO, GRESB, SDGs, C2C, LEED, WELL, BREEAM, etc.
  • Support stakeholder engagement efforts (e.g., interview and survey issuing, data analysis)
  • Conduct industry analyses and peer benchmarking
  • Provide sustainability committee support and client research needs
  • Assist in the quantification of environmental footprints (e.g., energy/GHG emissions/water/waste)

ESG Program Support

  • Create dynamic and innovative analytics-driven deliverables, including dashboards, spreadsheets, and reports
  • Create articles, presentations, and videos about sustainability, and external facing deliverables to communicate sustainability for and/or to clients

  • Assist in the development of corporate sustainability reports
  • Identify appropriate disclosures (e.g., GRI, SASB, TCFD, UN SDGs etc.) and corresponding data collection needs for compliance
  • Independently undertake project-related research, collect and analyze data, and engage with a range of stakeholders
  • Draft content on behalf of our clients based on information received
  • Help clients respond to rating agency/customer questionnaires

  • BA/BSc. degree in sustainability, engineering, or science, with a good understanding of business (4+ years of relevant and demonstrable experience may substitute)
  • Background working with large data sets and proven ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate findings (intermediate Excel knowledge required and experience with data science applications preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to assimilate and analyze operational and environmental data for compliance, indicators, and trends
