Blog: Sustainable Spring Cleaning

It is now the time of year when the sunshine might finally make its way into our homes evoking a sense of warmth and pleasantness, while also illuminating that mound of dust on your floor. As you pry open your cleaning cabinet beneath the kitchen sink, take a minute to see what kind of products you are using to clean the surfaces where you eat, bathe, and sleep. Luckily, you no longer have to choose between having a clean home and a healthy home. Green Seal– certified products are thoroughly tested to make sure they get the job done, while also being non-toxic, biodegradable, and safe around sensitive skin and eyes.

How Can You Make a Difference?

  1. If you are in need of new mops and cloths, look for ones that are made out of microfiber. Microfiber and water alone can remove up to 98.9% of bacteria from smooth surfaces. These cloths can also be used to ditch the excessive amount of paper towels you need to scrub your bathroom mirror, saving you money and doing better by the environment.
  2. Be mindful of your water use. Turning off the tap while brushing your teeth can save up to 200 gallons of water per month.
  3. Fill up your dishwasher! Washing dishes by hand (not using a bath) can use up to 20 gallons of water, compared to 4 gallons of water per cycle in the dishwasher. Just be sure to only run the dishwasher when it’s full.
  4. Try saving energy and money by hanging your clothes on a line instead of using a machine.

What We’re Doing

3R is committed to reducing water and energy use throughout the company. In the 3R office, we make sure to only run the dishwasher when it is completely full and we utilize energy efficient and motion censored lighting. As an organization, we make sure to track and reduce overall water and energy usage. So, this spring cleaning season, take the time to consider your family’s health as well as the environment’s, and choose sustainable products and practices.
